Internet Relay Chat
<chat, messaging> (IRC) /I-R-C/, occasionally /*rk/ A client-server chat system of large (often worldwide) networks. IRC is structured as networks of Internet servers, each accepting connections from client programs, one per user. The IRC community and the Usenet and MUD communities overlap to some extent, including both hackers and regular folks who have discovered the wonders of computer networks. Some Usenet jargon has been adopted on IRC, as have some conventions such as emoticons. There is also a vigorous native jargon (see the entry for "chat"). The largest and first IRC network is EFNet, with a smaller breakaway network called the Undernet having existed since 1992, and dozens of other networks having appeared (and sometimes disappeared) since. Internet Relay Chat

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a text-based chat system for instant messaging. IRC is designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-on-one communication via private messages as well as chat and data transfer, including file sharing.

Internet Relay Chat is implemented as an application layer protocol to facilitate communication in the form of text. The chat process works on a client–server networking model. Users connect, using a client—which may be a web app, a standalone desktop program, or embedded into part of a larger program—to an IRC server, which may be part of a larger IRC network. Examples of programs used to connect include Mibbit, IRCCloud, KiwiIRC, and mIRC.

IRC usage has been declining steadily since 2003, losing 60 percent of its users. In April 2011, the top 100 IRC networks served more than half a million users at a time.

Examples of use of Internet Relay Chat
1. In separate anti–child pornography operations by police infiltrating Internet Relay Chat groups, Spanish police have also made another 10 arrests and obtained information about 57 suspects in 28 countries, according to the statement.
2. Editorial meetings are held every other week in 10 different time zones using Internet Relay Chat, a form of computer technology that allows many people in different places to communicate online in real time.
3. It can also connect to a specific Internet relay chat server and give hackers remote control over affected systems, which can be used to infect other unpatched machines in a network and slow down the network performance.
4. People who cannot afford to feed their kids somehow manage to afford and subscribe to cellular phones; Turkish ISPs are notorious on Internet Relay Chat for being banned from a variety of servers, etc.
